Data for the ESTA application

With the ESTA authorization for visa-free travel to the USA, you can get to the country of your dreams with little effort! The electronic travel authorization can be applied for by nationals from the 40 countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP).

You can get an ESTA authorization by filling out a simple online application. An in-person appointment at a government office is not necessary. In general, filling out the ESTA application takes only a few minutes if you have all the relevant information and your biometric passport at hand.

Why do US authorities ask for social media profiles?

One of the points in the ESTA application is the question about your social media profiles, including your network IDs. The American authorities want to utilize this information to identify potential threats to national security more quickly and thus fight crime and terrorism more effectively.

Do I have to disclose my social media profiles?

The disclosure of social media profiles was temporarily required in the ESTA application as of 2020. However, the obligation was abandoned after a short time. Currently, it is optional to include social media profiles in the application.

Only the information that you have allowed in the privacy settings of your social media account is visible to the US authorities. This means that only posts that you have set to "public" visibility can be seen by the authorities. You do not have to provide any passwords.

Putting your social media profiles on the ESTA application will make it easier for US authorities to review it, and you may receive your ESTA approval more quickly.

Add social media profiles in the ESTA application

Within the ESTA form, you have the option to indicate the social media profiles you have used in the last five years. If you do not use any social media, you can answer "No" to the question about social media profiles and move on to the next step in the ESTA application.

If you have answered "Yes" to the question, you can now provide specific information about your profiles. The ESTA application will suggest the main social networks (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram) to you via a yes/no question.

When you are using one or more of these social networks, answer "Yes" to the specific question(s) and then provide your ID, user name, or screen name for each social media platform. A drop-down menu then allows you to add more platforms.
